Pedaling for affordable housing from Portland, Maine to Santa Barbara, California
Highlights of work made possible by the fundraising efforts of the ME2SB’15 team:
Habitat for Humanity Capital District
Bike & Build's $8,000 grant helped to co-sponsor the Youth Engagement House in Albany, NY. The home was partially funded by New York State's first Youth United Chapter, and hundreds of youth and youth adults were engaged in volunteering on Habitat's construction site. Grant funds were used to purchase construction materials, such as drywall, lumber and insulation. Over 280 youth and youth adults volunteered 5,984 hours on site.
Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning County
The grant from Bike & Build funded work on one new construction house, one rehab house, and DIY projects within the community and at the HFHMC ReStore. This grant allowed HFHMC to get over 75 young adults involved in the mission of building houses, community, and hope.
Amarillo Habitat for Humanity
The Bike & Build grant allowed Amarillo Habitat for Humanity to re-launch the “A Brush with Kindness” (ABWK) program. ABWK is an exterior home preservation program that offers minor repair services to eligible homeowners so they can continue to live in safe, decent homes for years to come. With this grant, Amarillo HFH was able to complete two ABWK projects for homeowners in the area. Over 40 young adult volunteers were involved in this project.
Yellow Springs Home, Inc
The ME2SB'15 grant was used to fund phase II of the four-unit C-Street project. This project will result in two permanent, affordable homes for low-income, first time home buyer families, including one special needs household. This project utilized over 400 volunteer hours to complete interior priming, landscaping, fence construction - in addition to 10 young adult volunteers to help with volunteer recruitment and management, media outreach, and grant writing.
