Scandinavia, September
I spent 15 days exploring the major cities of Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, and Norway.
After finishing up summer term finals, I started off my trip with two friends in Copenhagen, Denmark. We tried not to get too discouraged by the rainy weather, bought new raincoats and and biked from museum to museum. We explored landmarks and architecture projects we have studied over the years in school. As my friends headed South, I took a long train ride North to Stockholm, Sweden. Once there, I met with my professor's graduate school classmate and got toured around with an architect's perspective. After an intro at his office, we went to the woodland cemetery of Skogskyrkogården, a spectacular experience and personal highlight. Next, I flew to Helsinki, Finland and was welcomed with their Design Week of events and a special Alvar Aalto architecture exhibit! Another highlight was visiting Loyly, a sauna I had read about last summer on ArchDaily, to experience the true Finnish culture. I hopped a ferry to Suomnlinna, before taking a ship to Tallinn, Estonia and being surprised by all the new architecture surrounding the touristy Old Town. I enjoyed exhibitions and pavilions of the architecture biennale. Then I returned for Helsinki to fly to Oslo, Norway. There, I was welcomed by the sculpture biennale and amazed by views of the city from the Holmenkollen ski jump. Running out of energy and clean clothes, my trip concluded.
One journal, five countries and seven completed rolls of film later, I returned home with some amazing experiences and visual memories to share. Enjoy!
